Puppy Zummies or FRAP
Puppy Zoomies or FRAP (Frenetic Random Activity Periods) is when your puppy starts to run around in circles and is bouncing off the walls. This is normal for puppies and younger dogs, and they usually grow out of it (Tell that to my 8 year old Presa). Although, you should contact your veterinarian if it does become compulsive.
As long as the dog is able to run around safely without hurting themselves, anyone, or anything then it is fine for them to finish the zoomie cycle.
However, if it is happening at an inappropriate time, you can try the following tips and tricks. Keep in mind that it usually occurs after the dog has been cooped up for a long period of time or after stressful events such as going to the vet or taking a bath. These outbursts of energy are a way for the dog to get rid of excess energy.
Tips and Tricks:
Try to engage the dog in physical or mental activities 15 to 20 minutes before the outburst usually occurs. This could be going on a walk, playing fetch, or giving them a dog puzzle.
Do not chase them when it occurs. To your dog, this can become a fun game of chase, and lead them to continue doing it.
Give a control command, such as a sit or down. However, if you choose to do this, make sure you are able and willing to reinforce the command if your dog does not comply.
